Picked up some stuff from two of my favorite businesses. Bossdog Art and my barber shop. Also picked up three more classes to teach until the end of the year over the last week. They’re from my previous religious school which still have three weeks left on account of their holidays. Yes, they let this tatted up hardcore kid teach science to their kids; I even get invited to weddings and the occasional bris.

Just finished up a great unit on evolution where a rabbi and I discussed the topic during my last lecture. It was awesome.     This teaching online stuff is exhausting. I used to run a print shop for eight hours, go teach for three hours, then come home and work out and get shit done. I have a full weight set at my house and haven’t had energy to work out at all after teaching for much less time online. I’m burning fat as I haven’t been eating, but I can feel my muscles shrinking. Anyways, I hope everyone us doing well. If funds are low and you want a bit of a pick me up, Bossdog does a $15 mystery shirt deal. They’ve sent me some good T’s through this deal.

The most difficult part of the online teaching gig for me is having been thrown into it cold. in the fall, when the vaccines aren't ready yet, and we start the school year doing it this way, I'll be ready for it. At least more so than I was this year. And I won't be sitting in front of a web camera. I'm going to set up a studio in my garage with the podium that I always stood at in my classroom and teach on my feet like I would have in the classroom. It's just too late in the year to reinvent the wheel.

We filled out a questionnaire from our district about online school. My main comment of what would make it better would be to have recorded lectures form the teachers at least once a week that the kids could watch to learn the lessons. Especially with math, mom would help the boys only to have them say, “That’s not how we learned it!” And they were resistant to learning a new way . Another issue was inconsistencies in the way the teachers used Google Classroom for assignments. I know a lot of that was the way the district and teachers had to scramble to get up and running.

I’ve been teaching  live classes every day for pretty much all my courses since a week after spring break.

Same here, though only fewer than ten students typically show up. None of them turn on their web cameras, so I am communicating with my own picture on an otherwise black screen.

My middle schoolers all show up, and there’s maybe one or two high schoolers in each class that skip. However, we gave them computers to take home if they needed them. My kids’ school didn’t give them anything, so we’ve been sharing computers for their coursework. Our  nine year-old is a genius (actually), so I have her sit in on my high school courses and really only attend her language immersion courses. Our seven year-old is a nut, so we have to stay on top of her.

What’s the demographic of your students?

At one school mostly very wealthy with a couple of there on scholarship or state paid tuition.

The other two run the gamut income wise  with half my students being first gen Americans. They’re all orthodox Jews so very tight knit community.

My school’s demographic is heavily Latino. Lots of working parents and rearranged households. Have you read about the big Summer setback that the poorer kids experience? I see a lot of that. Are you Jewish or do you just happen to work in that community?
